8/12/97 - Sente & Gote

Sente & Gote

The two brothers, Sente and Gote, set out across the land from their womb cottage. A signpost marked "Paradise" stood fast to their trail but a few short measures from their birthplace.

"Sente, my brother, this arrow shows us the way to Paradise!" Gote shouted with childish glee. "What a royal journey this shall be!"

"Gote, my brother, alas, this signpost hath two arrows." Sente's arm extended parallel to the arrow with the other's likeness.

The two brothers, Sente and Gote, could not agree on which of the two paths they would take, so they decided each to take the path of the arrow which had first caught their eye, and pursue their quest in solitude.

Sente's journey was long, and full of danger and pain. The swamp serpents and the spiders of the dark haunted his steps, and he had naught but the faint glow of the waning moon to guide him. Fear was his only loyal companion, and his blood marked the trail he crossed.

Having no map, his going was slow, and he took missteps many times. Despair came often, and was quelled only by his hope of what lay ahead.

Gote, not long after departing, met up with a wise man. "Follow me, young one, for I can show you the way to Paradise."

What wonderful luck I have had! Gote thought to himself. And he followed the wise man, who took him on a trek through quiet meadows of green and yellow, and whispering valleys of red and orange.

As the wise man brought Gote to the gates of Paradise, they turned to see Sente, ragged and worn, pulling his way from the tangles of the forest, and wearily climbing the hill on which they stood.

Then the two brothers, Sente and Gote, stood together again, looking out on Paradise from their hill.

"Sente, my brother, it is so good to be with you again!" Gote shouted with childish glee.

Slowly, Sente turned to face Gote.

"Gote, my brother, we are not together, for you are not truly here until you find the way yourself."

The wise man smiled, and walked off.
